System-level testing and demonstration of solar technologies, primarily photovoltaic (PV) technologies, focus on two areas:
Within the Systems Integration subprogram, testing and demonstrations of solar technologies require two elements: laboratory capabilities for controlled experiments and systems installed in the field to analyze the technology in actual outdoor environments. These laboratory and outdoor activities will help the solar industry identify barriers to integrating high penetrations of solar electricity into the grid. Fortunately, with more solar systems installed in the field, there are more opportunities to develop a network of testing activities and demonstrations.
The goals of these activities are to test and evaluate new technologies and to demonstrate the potential of high penetrations of distributed renewable energy systems via applications in the field.
